My name is Martha, I am a dance enthusiast living in South East London. I grew up in the picturesque county of Kent and now work in London’s buzzing Covent Garden district. I believe dance to be a vital creative platform that, amongst many things, can be utilised to explore expression and provide entertainment whilst also being diverse enough to aid community engagement and education.
With a blooming enjoyment for writing, I founded Tableau Dance to share experiences and opinions of the contemporary scene to help inform and inspire young dance artists across the South East of England.
Having attended a local dance school from a young age I undertook GCSE Dance and A Level Performing Arts, giving academic attention to my favourite extra-curricular activity. A natural progression unfolded and by the age of eighteen it was clear I wanted my future to lie within the industry.
There are a number of pathways down which one can pursue dance, however I knew early on that my ambition was in an administrative career. As much as I was confident on stage, my interest in performance did not stretch far enough to cover the intensity of professional training. Whereas my naturally organised personality left me aptly engaged by the prospect of arts management. I therefore accepted a place at the University of Surrey on their BA Dance course in 2015: which with a holistic practice, placement year and bespoke business modules felt like a perfect fit. I achieved First Class Honours and was awarded Guildford School of Acting’s Internationalisation Award upon graduation.
After graduating, I was motivated to gain teaching experience abroad and so travelled to France and Nepal to deliver both dance workshops and English language lessons. These grounding cultural exchanges helped develop my communication skills whilst pushing me out of my comfort zone. I have also arranged movement workshops for Kent and Surrey based charities and so understand first-hand how dance is able to make significant differences to both people’s physical health and mental wellbeing.
I have previously worked with organisations including Rambert, Jasmin Vardimon Company, Punchdrunk Enrichment and the Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre, and in recent months have been glad to accept a position with The Royal Ballet. To develop a professional awareness of contemporary issues, I have actively undertaken training in Unconscious Bias, Trans Awareness, Equality & Diversity in the Workplace and Mental Health Awareness. Gathering experience across project management, dance delivery, office coordination and development strategies continues to inspire my arts administration career.
I look forward to applying my experience and passion for dance within this digital space. Tableau Dance will follow the industry as it grows and adapts so be sure to check out the social media channels linked below to keep up-to-date with the latest posts.
